The Most Expensive Word in Your Boardroom Is "Everyone"

Positioning is subtraction. Most brands can't stomach the maths.

Somewhere in every repositioning, a senior person says the quiet part out loud: "We just don't want to alienate anyone."

It sounds like caution. It's the most expensive decision in the room.

The instinct to widen

Watch what happens when a Gulf brand finally gets serious about standing out. The strategy lands sharp. Everyone nods. Then the softening starts.

Sales wants the line to work for the enterprise client and the walk-in. The founder wants his father to understand it. Someone on the board wants it to "leave room to grow." Legal wants it safer. Marketing wants it to test well.

Every edit is reasonable. Every edit shaves a degree off the edge. Ten reasonable edits later you have a brand that offends no one and moves no one. You paid for a scalpel and shipped a spoon.

Positioning is subtraction

A position isn't what you say about yourself. It's what you're willing to give up.

"For everyone" is not a market. It's the absence of a decision, wearing the costume of ambition. The moment a brand is for everyone, it is for no one in particular — and no one in particular doesn't wire the money, and won't defend you when something cheaper shows up wearing your colours.

The brands you actually respect in this region didn't get there by being agreeable. They chose someone specific to be for, and let everyone outside that choice walk past. The walking-past isn't the side effect. It's the strategy.

The comfort of "everyone"

"Everyone" is comfortable because it can't be wrong. Aim at all of them and no single miss is ever your fault. It's the safest answer on the table, which is exactly what makes it the most dangerous one. Safe brands aren't remembered. They're replaced.

The braver move is smaller. Name the person you're for. Then name, out loud, the person you're not for — and sit in how uncomfortable that second sentence feels. That discomfort is the sound of a position forming.

What "everyone" actually costs

Every time you protect "everyone," you spend something that never shows up on the P&L: distinctiveness, and the right to charge for it. You end up competing on price with the very people you were trying not to lose.

You can be liked by all. You can be chosen by the few who will pay for exactly what you are. Not both.

Pick.
